Mothball Fleet on the Hudson In-Person
The National Naval Defense Reserve Fleet, made up of thousands of surplus WW II Navy ships was established in 1946.
Among the eight locations selected to store the ships, maintain them, and keep them ready for action in the event of a national emergency. was the Hudson River in Tarrytown, New York. The Hudson River Defense Reserve Fleet (the Mothball Fleet) numbered 189 vessels at its peak in 1965. Eventually relocated north to Jones Point, Rockland County, the fleet remained active until 1971.
