The Library is a Zine: Digital Art and Zine Making Part 3 In-Person

In this three part multimedia art class Media Artist Matt Mottel will facilitate Zine* making that uses the library books,  and experience of ‘ being in and using the library’ as the source materials for creative self expression. Learn how to use shareware photo editing software PIXLR to design our zines along with using the xerox machine for printing. Search the library for books and materials related to your own personal interests. 

 *A ‘zine’ is a self published artwork. It can be poetic, diaristic, instructional covering any topic —- perfect for using the library for artistic research and creativity ! In the workshops, we will review the history of Zine publications. 

 

 

Matt Mottel (Brooklyn College, New Jersey City University Art Professor) is an artist, performer and writer who enlivens primary source materials and creates  collaborative artworks that amplify knowledge and provide access to subterranean culture. Social activism and cultural community are threads that run throughout Mottel’s extensive body of performances, videos,  sculptures and music. Mottel’s comprehensive artistic foraging stems from his native New York upbringing.

His B.A. is  in Political & Cultural Studies (SUNY New Paltz, 2003). He graduated from City College’s Digital Intermedia Art Practice program, receiving a M.F.A. in 2019.

Mottel builds geodesic domes as a performance architecture based on Syeus Mottel’s (father) 1970’s photojournalism of Loisaida cultural organization CHARAS, who built geodesic domes in collaboration with Buckminster Fuller.

In 2021, Mottel was invited by the Moers Music Festival as ‘Improviser in Residence’’ in Moers, Germany.  Mottel’s debut solo art exhibition, ‘Burnt Truth’ was at Gallery Gundula Gruber, in Vienna.
